FOOD: Gluten-Free with Bon Me! [Boston]

Well, folks, it's food truck weather again! April 1st kicked off another season of eating outside and soon Bostonians will be enjoying the Rose Kennedy Greenway with a grilled cheese or the brownstone-lined streets of Back Bay with a chicken taco.

There are loads of lunch options all across the city! But for those with gluten intolerance, it can be daunting and anxiety-inducing to decipher a chalkboard-scrawled menu while the line ahead of them dwindles. "Grabbing a bite to eat" often requires some internet digging and lengthy conversations at the ordering counter. While plenty of the Boston food trucks offer gluten-free and vegan options which can be found on their websites, I'm here to save you time and personally vouch for Bon Me's gluten-free lunch.

The Bon Me franchise consists of three food trucks and a restaurant space in Kendall Square, Cambridge. They serve up delicious Vietnamese sandwiches, rice bowls, and noodle salads, as well as veggie sides. For those with gluten intolerance, the rice noodle salad with Vietnamese vinaigrette is the way to go. For protein, I chose the cilantro peppercorn chicken but they offer other options, as well.

I told my server I was gluten-intolerant and the food prep team was extremely careful, changing gloves before putting together my lunch box of rice noodles, chicken, greens, veggies, and sprouts. The girl who took my order apologized that the only gluten-free dressing was the vinaigrette but she shouldn't have because it was so incredibly tasty. I ordered a side of edamame with star anise and sesame salt to round out my order. Lunch for under 10 dollars (and no gluten) is a beautiful thing.
