LIVE: Breaking Music in DTLA: RBSS 30 Days In LA w/ Cut Copy

Downtown Los Angeles:  A Summer that stretched far into fall and a yearlong drought ended Halloween weekend as if the spirits of the dead were adding their own touch of dark ambiance to a usually insane weekend of parties.  Cold weather (by LA standards) and scattered puddles from the previous night’s downpour did not stop what was the launch of something truly special for music fans and a list of up and coming artists.

Red Bull Sound Select launched their 30 Days In LA concert and event series Saturday November 1st with a show headlined by Australian New Wave/Dance quartet Cut Copy.  For weeks Red Bull has promised us entertainment in unique settings.  This show took place downtown in the Luxe hotel parking lot across from the LA Live complex, the cities closest thing to Times Square.  Opening support was provided by RBSS acts Wrestlers, a live Deep House trio out of Houston, TX, and Alt-Rockers Gemini Club from Chicago.  A sold out intimate crowd of roughly 500+ people were introduced to these groups while tossing down free tacos from Calle Taco and washing them down with Vodka Red Bulls while eagerly awaiting the headlining act.

Why would Red Bull do all of this for a month straight?  The answer is the 2 opening acts.  Yes, companies strive to build brand recognition by sponsoring festivals and special events.  The goal is to not just be an energy drink, it’s to be your energy drink.  The drink that represents you.  Like a friend who shares your interests and, together, have incredible nights out building long lasting memories.  While most companies are transparent when doing this, Red Bull seemingly transcends this by, well, seemingly giving a damn.  Extreme sports events aside, Red Bull Sound Select is a great example of their dedication to emerging subcultures.  The project helps discover new talent, teams them up with established artists and video directors, provides studio time and puts them on tour.  The mission has culminated with the 30 Days In LA event.  30 Days throughout November where numerous bands will be exposed nightly to crowds drawn in by current stars and legendary acts within various genres.

Day 1 goes over swimmingly as Cut Copy drew the numbers and delivered an amazing show.  Besides an energy high from all the drinks consumed, what people will walk away with is a new favorite group, possibly Wrestler, possibly Gemini Club, whom they will share with their friends the next day.  29 more days and 100’s of bands to go.
