There is no label more New York than DFA Records, and 12 years after the release of their first 12”, “House of Jealous Lovers” by The Rapture, the Red Bull Music Academy will throw their biggest party to date at Grand Prospect Hall on May 25. Playing live will be Shit Robot, The Crystal Ark, YACHT, Prinzhorn Dance School, Planningtorock, Larry Gus, Dan Bodan and Black Dice, with DJ sets by label founder James Murphy, The Juan MacLean, Pat Mahoney, Nancy Whang, Tim Sweeney, The Rapture’s Gabe and Vito, Still Going, Marcus Marr, and more to be added to the lineup.
Swapping the studio for the stage for one night, some of today’s most in-demand hip hop hitmakers will be at The Knitting Factory on May 22 for Drum Majors. Production heavyweights like long-time Drake collaborator Boi-1da, the main man behind Chicago’s drill rap sound, Young Chop (Chief Keef, Pusha T), and ratchet trailblazer DJ Mustard (Tyga, 2 Chainz) will exclusively reinterpret their biggest tracks live on stage. Other producers set to perform include J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League (Rick Ross, Nas), Bangladesh (Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj), Drumma Boy (Gucci Mane, Young Jeezy) and New Orleans vet Mannie Fresh who helped propel Lil Wayne to superstar status in the mid- to late nineties.
On May 28, the Red Bull Music Academy will premiere the much talked-about Elements of Light show by Pantha Du Prince and his The Bell Laboratory project. The concert in the venerable surroundings of Manhattan’s West Park Church will feature a ten-piece band on live electronics – and hundreds of (tubular) bells!
The following night will see Oscar and Grammy Award winner Ryuichi Sakamoto (of Yellow Magic Orchestra fame) and German electronic artist Alva Noto bring their acclaimed A/V show, “s”, to the US for the first time. At the Metropolitan Museum of Art, sparse percussions, throbbing bass, and crystalline piano solos will be embedded in sine waves or reworked live on stage, to establish a new concept of minimal, yet emotionally charged, electronic music.
25 years after first crossing paths, the duo synonymous with NYC house music, ‘Little’ Louie Vega and Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzalez aka Masters At Work, will play an exclusive, three-hour-long live set of their biggest tunes at one of NYC’s premier night clubs – Le Bain at the Standard Hotel – on May 3. With a whole new generation of producers currently turning to their classic house sound for inspiration, they will also bring along long-time collaborators as special guests, as well as participants of this year’s Red Bull Music Academy.
On May 20, dance music revolutionary, Donna Summer producer and Daft Punk collaborator, Giorgio Moroder will play his first-ever DJ set live at the Red Bull Music Academy’s special edition of François K’s internationally renowned Manhattan weekly, Deep Space at Cielo. Moroder will be joined by Academy students T.Williams and Benjamin Damage, who have both been making major waves recently with their respective takes on soulful garage and twisted techno.
No Sleep Till Croydon is a show paying tribute to the roots of what is arguably the most influential form of electronic dance music of the past decade, dubstep. Genre trailblazers Skream, Mala, Hatcha (Skream’s former mentor at pivotal South London record store Big Apple) and Plastician are all set to play sets of true classic dubstep records and beyond, at SRB Brooklyn on May 24.
Sharing knowledge has been a pillar of the Red Bull Music Academy since day 1, so on various days in different locations, an array of pioneering artists and producers will speak about and share their creative approach, and recall the moments that really mattered. Erykah Badu will talk about artistic freedom, motherhood, and controversy at the Brooklyn Museum on April 30, followed by a DJ set (under her DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown moniker) at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, as special guest for Brainfeeder Session NYC. Brian Eno will give one of his “Illustrated Talks” at the Great Hall at Cooper Union on May 6. James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem fame will revisit his unlikely rise to superstardom and starting the era-defining DFA label at the NYU Skirball Center on May 27. And on May 5, the producers of three pivotal David Bowie albums – Tony Visconti, Ken Scott – who’s also known as one of the main engineers for The Beatles –, and Chic mastermind Nile Rodgers will give rare insights into the career of one of music’s most singular artists, as part of Classic Album Sundays.
Previously announced Red Bull Music Academy New York 2013 events include a summit of bass music pioneers (United States of Bass), the East Coast debut of Brian Eno’s 77 Million Paintings, a Culture Clash at the Roseland Ballroom between leading crews in hip hop, electronic music, dancehall and tropical bass, and a noise micro-festival at the Knockdown Center with Stephen O’Malley and Kim Gordon’s Body/Head amongst many others (Drone Activity in Progress).
The Red Bull Music Academy event series will also feature performances by all 62 music makers selected as participants of the five-week-long workshop. Artists include current innovators of the global dance music and alternative pop scene such as Objekt (Hessle Audio), koreless (Young Turks), Rudi Zygadlo (Planet Mu), Evian Christ (Tri Angle), Suzanne Kraft (Running Back), Octo Octa (100% Silk), Sinjin Hawke (Pelican Fly), Benjamin Damage (50WEAPONS), T.Williams (PMR, Rinse), and many more.
