STYLE: Spike Lee x New Era Collaboration
On July 2nd, at New York City's Sunshine Theater, Spike Lee sat down alongside a panel comprised of Professor Elena Romero, Frank 151 founder Stephen Malbon, and New Era CEO Chris Koch for a Q & A, moderated by Marcus Troy. The panel talked about the origins of the collaboration between Spike and New Era and it's impact, which eventually resulted in new color ways for the iconic hat, and much more.
New Era has been in partnership with the Yankees since the 1930s, and although the styles have changed a few times since then, the Navy blue has remained the backdrop for the interlocking NY logo for many years. But ever since, in 1996, when Spike needed a hat to match his red Yankee down jacket, and requested a custom version of the official fitted, an endless number of styles and color ways have made the rounds both officially and in bootleg forms.
During the panel discussion, Spike recalls wanting the hat and calling New Era for it, and having his request bounced back to the late Steinbrenner himself before aproval. He says he "just wanted a hat." He had no idea of the impact it would make. But dont get it twisted, Spike also talked about how everything you saw in his films was consciously decided. From Radio Raheem's 'Love Hate' rings, to Mar's Jordans and Cazals, Mr. Lee has always had his eye on the street, and the streets have kept their eyes on him. He has, with little question, influenced generations, and the major corporations that market to them.
Now New Era has released their "1996" Heritage Collection featuring Spike's red fitted hat, and other colorways, including leather versions. Asked if he'd make a snapback version, Mr. Lee responded, "not from me." He thought the snapback thing had come and gone, which was hard to tell looking at the crowd, and the ever more elaborate straps and snaps that have been produced for the past few years. I for one almost begged for some strapped versions in a Mars Blackmon tone.
The Hats release July 17th from New Era, online and at retailers.
