BITE OF THE MOMENT: Mizu
For me, sushi has always been about convenience - my sushi spot is the one closest to my apartment, it's inexpensive, and it's...fine. Finding a quality sushi spot that doesn't break the bank can be hard in the city, and we've been in search of something a little more special lately that's easier on our wallets, without compromising the high standards we have on raw fish. Enter: Mizu. Located in Flatiron, Mizu proves to be a solid choice for affordable sushi, where the vibes are cozy, and most importantly, the fish is excellent quality.
Menu options at Mizu are pretty typical for a sushi restaurant of its caliber, though there is a number of standout items. For appetizers, the Shishito Peppers were a decent blistery-salty-spicy fare, but it was the Rock Shrimp Tempura that blew us away - delicately crispy battered shrimp doused in a cheery orange spicy honey garlic sauce that really woke up our tastebuds.
The sushi menu has tried-and-true standards (we shared a Chicken Tempura roll) plus a selection of special rolls, all hefty with filling and garnish, yet plated beautifully. We enjoyed the Gramercy Roll (tuna, salmon, yellowtail, avocado, and cucumber, wrapped in green dashi nori and topped with wasabi mayo) and the Avatar Roll (crunchy snow crab, avocado, black pepper tuna and honey wasabi sauce).
One of the more unique items we tried was a Naruto Roll. Wrapped in cucumber and without rice, resulting in a carb-less, more refreshing option, allowing the fish to really shine - we chose the Salmon Avocado Naruto, and the no-frills nature of the Naruto roll emphasized the high quality of the fish.
All that paired with hot sake on a chilly night and we've for sure locked down our new sushi spot in the area.
