FOOD: Dish Cafe [Highland Park, NJ]
Located along Highland Park's Raritan Avenue is a scrumptious spot that delivers the comfort of a cozy cafe and the variety of a diner. This wonderful find is known as Dish Café--a place where you can always expect a bustling dining room and a hearty meal.
Dish Café's roots are within the breakfast and lunch hours (I'll expand on that later). Opening at 7 a.m. daily until 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, there is no shortage of creative options. You will see your basics--eggs, waffles, sandwiches, etc--but Dish ups their ante with a changing lineup of daily specials. I have made a habit of ordering off the specials menu and over time my favorite of the bunch has emerged as The Breakfast Quesadilla.
Breakfast Quesadilla & Potatoes
Folded inside a tortilla is scrambled eggs, black beans, mixed veggies, and pepperjack cheese served with a side of salsa and paired with some of their zesty breakfast potatoes (or grits if you so choose). This meal is an extremely generous portion that almost always leaves me with half left over--as long as I can get a grip and exercise some willpower.
Accompanying all your breakfast delights is tasty coffee served in kitschy mugs that make you feel like you just pulled it out of your own cabinet.
If breakfast doesn't tickle your fancy, there are plenty of other dishes for you to dig into. Soups, salads, sandwiches, wraps, paninis, and more, intermixing American and Greek favorites. Among their solid wrap selection is the Chicken Souvlaki Wrap that packs traditional Greek flavor with a twist. It includes chicken souvlaki, lettuce, tomato, avocado, and tzatziki sauce. The avocado adds a creamy texture to the delicious flavor of the tzatziki sauce and sets this wrap apart from the rest.
To the delight of their local following, Dish Café just debuted dinner hours: Wednesday and Thursday 5 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday 5 to 10 pm.. They will feature nightly dinner specials that will include new creations--all of which can be enjoyed with your favorite adult beverage as Dish Cafe is now BYOB.
So grab your friends, a bottle of wine (not for breakfast, buddy) and most importantly, your appetite, when you dine at Dish Cafe of Highland Park this fall.
