FOOD: Philly's Cheu Noodle Bar
When people crave food from Philly, the first thing that usually comes to mind is a juicy, greasy, mouth-watering cheesesteak. Growing up just outside of the City of Brotherly Love, it’s probably one of the last options I’d consider and it’s not even the best city’s sandwich; just ask Adam Richman about the roast pork sandwich at DiNic’s.
Anyone who knows me knows that I love ramen and all things Toki. Thrillist recently divulged the 21 best ramen shops in the country and to no surprise Toki Underground made the cut. After a disappointing bowl of noodles from a newcomer to the DC scene, I had to quickly satiate my craving at Cheu Noodle Bar, another one of Thrillist’s faves.
I entered the 28 seat noodle shop on 10th Street and was pleasantly greeted and seated at the bar. I decided to cool off with the Summit Brewing Southern Cape, a sparking ale with tropical fruity, lightly malted notes and a carbonated mouthfeel. My eyes quickly scanned the menu and locked in on the coconut curry ramen with pork belly add-on. Within a few minutes, the aroma of coconut and curry invaded my nasal passages and set the mood for ramen nom nom. The pork belly was cooked to perfection and played well against the crunch of the peanuts, bean sprouts, bok choy, and fresh herbs immersed in the smooth and flavorful broth.
This isn’t your typical ramen joint but a showcase of the talents of chef Ben Puchowitz (also of Matyson, another one of my favorite spots) and staff. Take my advice the next time you’re in Philly, “Slurp this!”
