LIVE: Afropunk Music Festival 2014

Afropunk touched down at Commodore Barry Park in Brooklyn on August 23rd and 24th. In its tenth year, Afropunk finds itself still ahead of the festival curve as far as fashion, music and most importantly fun is concerned. Every year I show up, every year I am surprised on how such a large scale free music event can be so hassle free. Yes, figuring out which stage is the ‘green’ stage can be difficult. Yes, they have around 32 different entrances depending on what level of tickets you have (while technically free you could get express and even VIP accesses). And yes, D’Angelo came out so late it felt you might as wel have just called it Day 3. But the actual experience was fantastic; the grounds were clean, bathroom lines not too bad, great sightlines for all the bands, and the people weren’t there not to get trashed but to dance, hang and have a good time

We could get into young acts that impressed us (Cakes Da Killa, Sunny Gang) the established acts that still have it (the ageless Fishbone, the eternal Meshell Ndegeocello) and disappointments (the shockingly short Shabazz Palaces set). But that would be besides the point; in Afropunk you have one of the best festival experiences in the world for the awesome price of free.
