Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings Bring a Little Holiday Soul to the Lincoln Theatre in DC
If you've ever attended a Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings show, then you know you're going to throughly entertained. And, honey..at their show at the Lincoln Theatre in DC, Sharon and the crew delivered, but with a little twist. Sharon and the Dap- Kings recently released It's a Holiday Party, an album that consists of soulful holiday favorites. And they've embarked on a few dates to support the album.
Opening up the show was Saun and Star, when they aren't singing songs from their own album, they supply the sweet backing vocals for Sharon and the Dap-Kings. I've caught their act a couple of times, each time better than the last. The transition from the openers to Sharon Jones was fast and seamless. When Jones danced out to the stage the audience was already on their feet cheering for the mighty powerhouse.
The show was a pleasant mix of holiday songs and old favorites. Jones' high spirit and witty banter was in full swing. During one of the song transitions, Jones who hit the stage dancing had to change out of her gold heels into a pair of sandals, due to sensitivity of her feet--one of the side effect of chemotherapy treatment. And she didn't miss a beat, slipped on those sandles and bounced right back into the show. The soulful arrangements of the holiday songs are so great that you will find yourself snapping your fingers and wanting to put on your fancy holiday sweater and dance around--even if you abhor holiday music, it will convert you.
