CMJ Finds - Gary Clark Jr

The name Gary Clark Jr has been on my ears for a minute, but it wasn't until I saw him at the SPIN/Puma showcase on Friday that I realized what the buzz was about. The 27 year old Texan sounds way older than his years, but he's become a legend in the Austin blues scene, gigging with such artists as Jimmie Vaughan and getting props from Eric Clapton. He's not even 30, but he's already gotten a 10 year career in the music scene.

What you get from Clark is straight ahead blues guitar. No apologies. No filter. Tracks like "Bright Lights," (which would fit in as nicely as Aloe's "I Need a Dollar" as the theme of How to Make It In America) are gritty and bluesy as ever. But it's more than that. I feel like Clark adds life to an artform that some say is dead. Check it.
