MUSIC: Kendrick Lamar X J. Cole - Black Friday
From EPMD to the Dogg Pound during golden era of hip-hop MC duo’s reigned supreme. As rap matured and the artists actively chased commercial success (and most of the royalties that come with it) it rap duos fell out of favor. There were always exceptions the Clipse had a fantastic run last decade and most recently Run The Jewels became one of the most critically acclaimed rap acts in the world.
Instead it looks like we are in the era of superstar rap duos; where the big rappers take time off from their own careers to have a little fun with artists that they sync well with musically and personally. You had Watch The Throne a few years back, Drake and Future dropped their trap and lean infused album a few months ago, and apparently Kendrick Lamar and J.Cole have something in the works for February. In order to start wetting the people’s appetites they both released two records entitled ‘Black Friday’ rapping over each other’s beats. J.Cole sounds invigorated for once, and Kendrick continues proving he’s the best MC in the world.
