MUSIC: Kil - D&D's Tribute Mix
For decades recording studios were where brilliant pieces of music were created, honed down, recorded and mastered. It was a rite of passage for many musicians; hustle enough to get enough cash to pay for time to professionally record their tracks. Nowadays with laptops being able to create reasonably close sounding studio records (at an infinitely cheaper price point), the old school music studios are going the way of the dinosaur. Dave Grohl’s recent HBO series, Sonic Highways, revisited a bunch of these studios and reminded you what made them inspire so many great recordings over the decades.
D&D studios was the mecca for the East Coast “Boom Bap” sound and the list of artists who recorded there at the prime of their careers is pretty intense: KRS-1, Nas, Notorious B.I.G…the list goes on and on. It was where classic tracks were made and where aspiring MC’s hoped one day to record.
KIL has made a mix of some of these classic tracks in tribute to the closing studio, and you can grab it from his site WILLMAKEBEATSFORFOOD.
Below we've got mini-documentry by DJ Premier on what made this place special.
