One of my favorite new rappers of the last couple of years is Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire. He first came under my radar with his Lost In Translation mixtape which featured a bunch of El-P (of Run the Jewels fame) instrumentals. Even though he used them unasked, El-P was impressed with his work and brought him on tour along with him and Killer Mike. He got signed to Universal and when his major label debut got released he promptly became one of the biggest rappers out there. Or at least that’s what he thought would happen. Instead he got caught in major label hell so crazy that even Rollingstone covered it. The thing about Exquire as an MC is that while he’s definitely aligned to hood hip-hop tropes (growing up in the streets of Brooklyn will do that to you) he’s also able to channel the eclecticism happening around him; not many street rappers are beat jacking beats made for Definitive Jux rappers which was once the premier label for backpacker hip-hop. Universal should have had a hit rapper on their hands, but as usual with major labels they screwed it up. The good news is that he’s finally back (and major label free) with an upcoming EP set to drop. Here’s a song from it, “Ice Cups” where he’s taking it to the streets literally. You can watch that above, and below you can experience his "Huzzah Remix" which features pretty much every dope rapper in the world.
