It’s been a busy year for Robert Glasper and company: May saw the release of their reverent Miles Davis tribute album Everything's Beautiful. They’re just now heading into a packed fall/winter tour, hitting spots from Austria to Israel and Spain to San Francisco. And later this month, a second album is expected: ArtScience, the first release which promises an equal balance of musical contributions from all four members. Gone are the omnipresent featured guest spots from Black Radio; in the words of Glasper: “People need to hear what the Experiment sounds like, just us—know what our vibe is and can be.”
First single “Find You”, then, sounds like the perfect (re)introduction to the Robert Glasper Experiment. Like the group's best, it balances fearless eclecticism and instrumental heroics (check the ripping free-jazz guitar solo) with honeyed pop sensibility. The kaleidoscopic jump through genres and vibes on “Find You” is perhaps something only an artist like Glasper would feel comfortable releasing as a single…and that’s exactly the sensibility his fans have come to appreciate.
ArtScience is expected on September 16.
