REVIEW: Paris Jones - March EP
Like a faithful postmaster, Paris Jones delivers the March EP -a post-equinox ardor perfectly timed as the weather thaws and warms our mood. His commitment to release a year’s worth of music for each calendar month has proven a successful invention, since the January and February EPs set the tone to expect the unexpected. So when Jones makes Janelle Monae the object of his musings, it results in six engaging tracks that are as much homage to the Electric Lady as they are to Jones’ handiness as a producer. Although MF Doom, Q-Tip and Phife Dawg get in on the mashup, Jones’ own vocals have begun to feel a bit absent. But that’s the point. Continuing to let his beat making merit speak for him, instead of the customary verse-hook-verse format, the ever-transmuting Jones keeps us guessing. But if the Janelle Monae inspired tunes on March are any inkling, Paris Jones gives us reason enough to countdown the next 30 days.
