The Couch Sessions

Earlier this year, a mysterious band dropped one of the best albums of the year (so far), without fanfare or any Internet speculation. The band, named Sault, started to exist on the far corners of the music scene, gaining praise from music tastemakers and critics alike. Their music is a genre-bending collection sounds, ranging from Motown to Afrobeat, with voices that sound familiar enough (Santigold, Solange, Pharrell, etc) to raise questions. I was okay with this when they released their first album, 5, but once their follow up 7 hit, I was more intrigued.

In this "always on" world of social media and Instagram influencers, the band has managed to keep their identities hidden for an extended period of time.

And it's racking my brain.

As an introvert, I should appreciate what this band is doing. Again, it should be about the music rather than the image and flash. However, I can't stop believing that as a listener, I'm a part of some stealth cat and mouse game. They're teasing us.....even when they post pictures on the Internet, they use gloves to disguise their hands. Sneaky AF.

So I started to do some digging and here is what I found:

The albums have been released on the UK imprint Forever Living Originals, whose Instagram account boasts "signees" such as Kid Sister, Cleo Soul, and Inflo
Production Credits for the album are credited to Dean “Inflo” Wynton Josiah, who has written/produced for such artists as Little Simz, Jungle, and Michael Kiwanuka
Kid Sister has been mentioned on several blogs as a collaborator. However you would never know by looking at her Twitter account.

That is....all we know. Unfortunately the band isn't popular enough for a major media organization to devote time and resources (aka interns) to crack this case.
