VIDEO: Frank Ocean - Nikes
Frank Ocean is purposefully trolling us all, right? After the "will he/won't he" approach to his new album's release date, the pop-up shop with magazines, the album title change, the visual album vs. the audio album vs. whatever this third version is...Ocean seems to be calculatedly doing everything possible to defy and confound expectations.
Fortunately, his ravenously anticipated follow-up to 2012's Channel Orange, titled Boys Don't Cry Blond Blonde, proves well worth the wait. But the trolling continues on the first single "Nikes," wherein Ocean takes his voice—one of the most beautiful sounds in all of R&B music—and wraps it in Auto-Tune. It feels like 2007 all over again.
Like the new album itself, the video for "Nikes" is artful, avant-garde, provocative, and undeniably sexy. It features talking Chihuahuas, motorcyclists on fire, ridiculous sports cars (because dude's got a serious auto-fetish) and lots and lots of NSFW skin.
“I got two versions,” Ocean sings, as the video flickers from two Virgin Mary statues to two virginal girls. Wait, did he actually say "versions" or "virgins"? Does it matter? By the time you're finished reading this, Ocean's likely changed the album title again three more times, self-released it through a brand-new label, and remixed it with DJ Khaled. Just sit back and enjoy a masterful pop provocateur at work.
