ART EXHIBIT: Oaxaca, Mexico: Hecho en Oaxaca

12 artists descend on Oaxaca Mexico for the first Hecho en Oaxaca exhibit (Made in Oaxaca), opening Friday July 5th, 2013 at the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo (MACO). For those who don't speak Spanish, the museum's event site dedicates most of it's description to educating people about what street art is, though Oaxaca is no stranger to the art form.

There already are murals throughout the city, and southern Mexican state, by international artists such as Belin x Kola, and many other local collectives and individual artists, as you can see here. For many local artists, the streetscape has been a place of dialogue with the people where all topics, especially politics are covered to the chagrin of the authorities, as most of the works are not sanctioned and very critical of the state of affairs. But this exhibition, curated by Pedro Alonzo, pairs a dozen international heavy hitters and some local giants to create works to be displayed at the MACO, and other site specific installations throughout the city.

Pedro Alonzo, told reporters in a press release that the city will function as a canvas for the artists. He emphasized the importance of the event as it will give the people of Oaxaca an opportunity to experience the artists' work inside the museum, followed by the urban landscape. Artists included in the exhibit are Retna, Vhils, Date Farmers, Dr. Lakra, How and Nosm, Lapiztola, MOMO, Nunca, Saner, StenLex, Yescka, and Swoon.
