DRINK: Root Cellar Whiskey Bar @ Pinea [DC]
My insatiable thirst of cocktail couture recently led me to W Hotel. Although the swanky hotel is a gem with its breathtaking views, historically this location hasn't won over many Washingtonians when considering where to wine and dine. But things are about to change. Gone is J & G Steakhouse. In its place is Pinea featuring flavorful Mediterranean delights by Executive Chef Barry Koslow’s (most recently at DGS) And with the extreme makeover of the dining room and kitchen also came a few updates to basement bar, Root Cellar Whiskey Bar.
Dim lights, soft music, and a cozy fire in the background set the mood. Their seasonal craft cocktail menu, which is inspired by modern European twists on classic cocktails, features four rotating barrel-aged cocktails. I was lucky enough to get my hands on the oaky-yet-refined Negroni and Manhattan. Another favorite was the Old Square, an interpretation of the Vieux Carre, composed of Knob Creek, Remy VS, Dolin Rouge, Benedictine, and Apple Bitters. For fans of the cult-inspiring and industry favorite, Pappy Van Winkle, Root Cellar Whiskey Bar will feature a monthly five-course dinner and game pairing series. The first one was this past Saturday. They also feature a daily happy hour from 5 to 8 PM with drink and food specials.
Based on the food alone, Pinea is worth staying on this side of town after work. And given what Root Cellar Whiskey Bar showcased the other night, it is more than worth the Uber ride as well.
