EVENT: Not Just Good Beer, But Great Beer at Edible Manhattan's Good Beer 2016
[all photos and most notes by Conor Rose]
Edible Manhattan is one of the classiest food publications we can think of, so when they throw an event, you can assume it'll be a classy affair. Held on Thursday, July 28, much of the Financial District's post-work crowd (Conor was mistaken for a broker or at least someone who goes to broker events), food industry types, and plain old beer lovers gathered in the shiny 180 Maiden Lane building to imbibe on unlimited samples of beer from all over the region. Paired with each brewing company were bites from various NYC eateries that sopped up all the alcohol - favorite bites included Gramercy Tavern's summery Corn and Lobster Salad, anything with pork, and of course some no-frills big and juicy sausages from Les Trois Petits Cochons.
After a rigorous taste test which culminated in some incomprehensible tasting notes, our top choices came out to Great South Bay Brewery's Blood Orange Pale Ale, KelSo American Pale Lager, and Southern Tier Brewing Company's Tangier (tart, refreshing, kinda hoppy). On the non-beer, gluten-less side, there were a lot of options, with favorites Wolffer Estate Vineyard's Dry White Cider (tart - reminiscent of wine) was the top choice, followed by Original Sin's Elderberry Cider (surprisingly not sweet for a notoriously sweet cider company) and Nobletree Coffee's take on a Dark and Stormy.
