Full disclosure: I am a full-on earthy crunchy hippie. In addition to being, you know, vegan, I make my own granola, I like my cleaning products eco-friendly, recycle everything, bike to work, wear my Tevas everywhere and if I didn’t live in a tiny, rented studio I would have a garden, and I would compost. So trust me when I say that if you’re going to be anywhere in or around DC this weekend, you have to check out the inaugural Raw Food Festival. Hosted by Emergence Community Arts Collective in Pleasant Plains, the Saturday evening event promises to demystify the technique with panel discussions, cooking demos, and tons of tastings designed to please the palate.

I know what you’re thinking: I’m in a long-term relationship with bacon. Well, if you call yourself a foodie, you owe it to yourself to experience some truly mind-blowing culinary creativity: I’ve had raw pizza, walnut meat tacos, and mushroom “scallops,” and chocolate brownies more exciting than their cooked counterparts, just because it’s made me go, Whoa, how did they do that? I’m definitely taking notes.

Also, it’s hot, DC. The less we all have to turn on our ovens to prepare our meals, the better.

Tickets can be purchased here. For more information, visit the event’s Facebook page.
