FOOD: D.C.'s GBD

Every Sunday after church as a kid growing up on the outskirts of Philly, I would travel to the bakery and indulge in some old-fashioned goodness with my family.  Since moving to the District, I have searched in every crevice of this city to find a proper doughnut without much success.  Frustrated, I often made my own.  Well, my insatiable sweet tooth has finally been fulfilled with the arrival of GBD (Golden Brown Delicious), the brainchild of Kyle Bailey and Tiffany MacIsaac of the Neighborhood Restaurant Group.

After tasting their reincarnated version of the Luther at Churchkey, I did not have the highest expectations.  But my inner fat kid won one Sunday morning and I got an assortment of doughnuts and a creme fraiche chicken biscuit to go.  OMG.  The biscuit was hands-down the best biscuit I have ever had and I have trekked throughout the south in search of buttermilk deliciousness.  It was light, airy, and so darn tasty.  The chicken was extra crispy with subtle hints of honey and pepper.  And then there were the doughnuts.  I annihilated the pumpkin, maple bourbon bacon, some Nutella version, and coffee cake doughnuts.

Take it from someone who lived to get his hands filthy from devouring dozens of vanilla glazed pastry as a kid, GBD is certified.  And I have been to the other new shop across town.  Best of all, GBD is open early, open late!  Check it out for yourself.
