Upon entering Maketto, the first thought that came to mind was feng shui. The Chinese term translates to wind and water. And it’s influence is evident in the placement of each individual operation housed at 1351 H St NE. Separate they are not. One individual space flows into the next and with that, Maketto’s design team achieved its goal.

Greeted by the staff at local clothing brand, DURKL, my eyes quickly glanced at their offerings. I knew I would be back but my energy was instantly drawn to the open courtyard. On my way to check out the space, my nose decided I would cease movement at the counter where Frenchie’s Artisan Pastries and Desserts was selling their undeniably tasty treats.

I quickly settled on a heavenly almond croissant and headed upstairs to where Vigilante Coffee reigns supreme. Local roaster, Chris Vigilante, and company provide one of the highest quality coffee experiences in the District. Accompanying my flat white was a small cup of sparkling water and two crumbled pieces of banana bread. As I devoured my pastries outside, the architecture immediately transported my soul to Japan. Form follows function and Maketto is just that. The cup that housed the water had touches green cracked glazed inside that reminded me of the cells of a leaf. The coffee mug had indentations making it perfect for gripping as well.

On my way out, I met Franklin Thompson (alias APT 50), a local artist who also works at Durkl. His pieces are featured throughout Maketto and on sale to the public.

Maketto’s energy is all about harmonious balance. This open air museum that doubles as retail, restaurant, and coffee outfit left know stone unturned in its design, delivery, and service. On this early morning escapade, I didn’t have enough time to enjoy Erik Bruner-Yang and James Woznuik’s gems. But, I will definitely be back soon to do so.
