FOOD + DRINK: Sofia Wine Bar -- Midtown East

When the weather gets colder, there are few things better than cozying up in a wine bar.  The other night I found myself in one of these moods and decided to scope out a good wine bar to take my friend for his birthday.  He lives in the East 50's--an area I can't lie and pretend I know very well, but we came across Sofia Wine Bar and it was honestly exactly what I want in a wine bar.

It's pretty small, a standard I think for a wine bar, but we only had to wait about 10 minutes for a table at around 7pm on a Wednesday night.  The staff there was incredibly friendly and gave us a great recommendation on a bottle of red after the Cabernet Sauvignon we ordered turned out to be sold out.  I can't remember what it was, but I do remember liking it!  Here's a photo of the bottle:

Once we sat down we shared the margherita pizza and the cheese plate--both of which I am looking forward to trying again!  While the wine was on more of the pricey end, the food was reasonably priced.  I don't know much about wine, I know when I don't like something, but it seems like the wine at Sofia's is very good.  And when you're going to a wine bar, shouldn't that be the focus?

Bottom line: if you find yourself in the East 50's, do yourself a favor and go to Sofia's.  The cozy atmosphere and amazing wine will make you forget you're even in Midtown.
