FOOD: Mother of Pearl [NYC]

As a resident of the East Village, specifically Alphabet City, I was surprised to see a new bar in the place of the Gin Palace. For some reason I would affectionately call it Whiskey Princess even though I had only actually been there once before. It was kind of dark and depressing anyway, but there are places that just seem to fit, right?
Anyway, I was so surprised to see this new spot, Mother of Pearl, on Avenue A in place of the Gin Palace, with its white flowing curtains and open layout. I couldn't resist--I was out with my roommates who I haven't seen in a few weeks and we were looking for a place to have a drink or two.
It was close to 10pm on a Thursday night and we were seated right away, although we were seated inside by the bar rather than the space with all of the open windows, but I won't hold it against anyone. The vibe in the place is straight up Polynesian, which is unique and cool but makes me wonder how it will fare in the winter time. But for now, it's an awesome addition to the neighborhood if you're looking to feel like you are on vacation and not actually in Manhattan.
The drink list is a little odd--the cocktails all seem very sweet but seeing as Mother of Pearl is part of the Death & Company family (along with Bourgeois Pig, Proletariat, Cienfuegos, Mayahuel, Amor y Amargo, and 124 Rabbit Club) I'm sure they could make any of the cocktail classics.
I opted for the Battleship Julep ($15) which is chamomile, benedictine, and minted bourbon, served in a copper mug. It was indeed quite good, although next time I think I would just stick to a Manhattan or a glass of wine or beer, the atmosphere and décor is very fun. And not to mention this isn't just a cocktail bar--there is a food menu worth investigating in the future although it admittedly looks a bit pricey at first glance.
All in all, Mother of Pearl is a cool new spot worthy of stopping by next time you're in the East Village.
