FOOD: New Shop at Chelsea Market: Liddabit Sweets!

Liddabit SweetsLiddabit Sweets just opened its first retail location at Chelsea Market in Manhattan. The 5-person candy company is based in Brooklyn and is the brainchild of Liz Gutman and Jen King, who met at pastry school. What makes this sweet shop unique is that they work with other small, local and family-owned businesses not only to support the 'mom and pops' but also to ensure that their ingredients are free of any artificial flavors or preservatives. Among their local sources, the Liddabit Sweets team taps the Brooklyn Brewery for their Brown Ale, East India Pale Ale, and Black Chocolate Stout, Ronnybrook Dairy (upstate NY) for their milk and heavy cream, and Peeled Snacks in Brooklyn for their dried fruits. With a focus on locally sourced and fresh and seasonal ingredients, the team behind the candy can boast their responsible cooking. Each sugary treat is also wrapped and packaged by the hands of the Liddabit Sweets team!

This candy company isn't only noteworthy for their local sourcing - they also feature rather adventurous treats that should intrigue any sweet tooth. There's the Bourbon-Coffee-Bacon Caramel Corn, the Peanut Butter and Jelly cookie candy bar, and the Slurtle - a combination of beer caramel on top of potato chips encased in a dark chocolate shell. For the less adventurous sweet eater, I recommend the always popular Sea Salt Caramels. With 6 to a box ($7 for the box), I was satisfied with the slightly crunchy dark chocolate treat with soft caramel. Plus the Liddabit Sweets staff member helping me decide my order was super helpful and knowledgeable - and patient! With so much sugar to choose from, it took me a while to decide on those caramels!

Chealsea Market is an adventure in its own right. And now it just got a little sweeter. Make sure to visit Liddabit Sweets (they've also got samples!) the next time you're in the neighborhood.
