FOOD: Pil Pil [NYC]
I am soo excited to be traveling to Barcelona in September for the first time, however, if a trip to Europe is not quite in the cards, look no further than Pil Pil Spanish Tapas and Wine bar for your fix. When I used to live on the Upper East Side this place was the only way I could lure my downtown friends to my neck of the woods. The sangria and traditional dishes are well worth the trip. The ambiance is why it quickly became my favorite suggestion for date night. Dimly lit melted white candles and broken branches fill the brick walls giving the illusion of an intimate snowy cave.
The menu boasts small tapas style dishes that include meats, seafood, toasts, cocas/flat breads, croquettes, and empanadas. All tapas are under $16 and though they are small plates they definitely hit the spot. Every day from 4 pm-7 pm happy hour consists of $3 beer and homemade white or red sangria. This isn’t your lazy BBQ sangria from an over-sized plastic bottle. The sangria at Pil Pil is divine; with fresh fruit and the right amount of boldly flavored wine and spirits it can’t be beat!
Brunch is served Saturday and Sunday from 11 am-4 pm for $14.95 you will choose a region from Spain and enjoy three tapas and unlimited sangria. I caught the tail end of the Friday night happy hour and enjoyed a glass of red sangria. My boyfriend and I snacked on two lamb sliders with Serrano ham, Manchego cheese served with seasoned fries glazed with spicy ketchup and aioli sauce. This last visit reminded me why Pil Pil always keeps me coming back for more!
