Q&A: Village Voice's Rosemary Jorda on Brooklyn Pour
In anticipation of this Saturday's Village Voice Brooklyn Pour event, I was lucky enough to ask Rosemary Jorda, the event director for Village Voice, some questions about this year's event. Check out the interview below and don't forget to buy a ticket before it sells out!
How will this year be different from the previous two years and what changes are you most excited about?
Every year we try and make The Village Voice's Brooklyn Pour even better than the year before! We always curate new brewers into the mix with this season's best pours, while inviting back some former Brooklyn Pour favorite brews. We also have built out the official Brooklyn Pour Food Court inside the bank to give our guests a place to take a break from the sampling, snack on some great eats like Mrs. Dorsey's Grilled Cheese & more, and recharge to tackle our 66+ brewer tables and 100+ beers.
A new upgrade to this year is the expansion of our Beer Talks programming. This year's program will include its own talks area on the vault level of the event so attendees can gather there every 15 minutes of the main event to learn and listen to some of the brewing world's top experts share their beer knowledge. This year we have 4 great talks spanning the beer spectrum; NYC Brewin’: From NYC Nanos to Gigantos, Contracts and Everything In Between with Chris Cuzme, brewer at 508 Gastrobrewery and a co-organizer of NYC Beer Week., co-Host Mary Izett from Fuhmentaboudit! on Heritage Radio Network to discuss Urban Homebrewing and the easiness of making brews at home, even in the smallest NYC apartments, Untappd + Beer = The Perfect Pint with UnTappd app Co-Founder Greg Avola will share the tech aspect of beer and beer trends around the world & Beertography with John Kleinchester will show attendees how to take the best photos of their perfect pints and host an exclusive event only Beertography Contest.
Tell us about the DJ sets planned for the day--how did this come about? Is it something you did last year?
Music is always an important part of every Village Voice signature event. Last year we worked with the DJ duo Finger on the Pulse and this year we are hosting DJs Marissa Paternoster, front woman of Screaming Females & Joe Steinhardt of Don Giovanni Records. Marissa has worked with us on past Voice events and we love being able to mix all of our event genres together. Marissa and Joe will supply some fun & energetic tunes to set a great backdrop for Brooklyn Pour.
What do you hope guests will leave with/learn/experience from a day at Brooklyn Pour?
Every year we hope our attendees leave Brooklyn Pour a little more savvy of the amazing brewer community here in New York & beyond. Working with the New York City Brewer's Guild, we are showcasing some of the best craft beers brewed right here in NYC, giving our attendees the chance to sample what is being made in their own backyard. We also host a hefty representation of national and global beers, so we hope our event guests get to broaden their tastes. Mix these samples with our beer talks and there is great new beer knowledge for everyone.
What's one thing we must check out/not miss at Brooklyn Pour?
We have some great new brewers pouring at this year's event! Barrier Brewing Company who was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy and is reopened will be offering Brooklyn Pour’s first ever Butternut Squash Beer – “SaazSquash Butternut Squash Ale.”, Steadfast Beer Co. will be offering two Gluten-free beers, Steadfast Sorghum Pale Ale & Steadfast Golden Blonde Ale. Moonlight Meadery debuts as the first ever MEAD participant, bringing a selection of flavors from Dry Blueberry to Wildflower. Brooklyn Pour will also feature a number of imports including Brasserie Pietra (France), Hovel Germany), MOA (New Zealand), and Rekorderlig Cider (Sweden). There will also be dozens of additional local, global and national brewers that you can not miss!
Can you tell us a little about your partnership with BRIC and what you admire most about this organization?
BRIC is an amazing friend of the Village Voice. We have supported their annual summer music festival Celebrate Brooklyn for years and are thrilled to support them with the kick off of BRIC House. BRIC has been a non-for-profit organization for 35 years and their newest endeavor, BRIC House, is a new arts & media center that is opening this fall in Ft. Greene, near the site of Brooklyn Pour. BRIC house is a home for the art community to meet and further work within their craft and will feature a performance space, art gallery, television production studios and more for public access. A portion of proceeds from Brooklyn Pour ticket sales will go towards BRIC House.
